From August 29th to September 1st, 2023, Munich will host the second edition of the leading conference on superconducting qubits and algorithms, the SQA Conference, where an array of keynote speakers and invited speakers from around the world will be speaking on various topics.

In this blog, we will explore the reasons to attend and what to expect from some of the speakers.

Professor Angela Kou, Assistant professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

In her talk, Professor Kou will discuss experimental work on Andreev spin qubits and coupling an Andreev spin qubit to a transmon.

She works on building novel superconducting circuits for quantum information and for sensing superconducting and topological materials.

I think it’s great that there is a conference dedicated to superconducting qubits. I’m very excited to both share our recent work and hear about others’ new results,” she said.

Professor Johannes Fink, Professor at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA)

Professor Fink will cover a few interesting topics, which will revolve around uniting the cold world of superconductors and microwaves with the warm surroundings of quantum photonics.

I missed the SQA last year, so this is a great honour, and I am looking very much forward to the event. It is actually great to see that our rapidly growing and advancing field now also has a dedicated and recurring conference. This will help us grow as a community and foster collaboration,” he said.

There are a lot of contradicting requirements, he stated, but “developing a quantum-limited microwave-photonic technology offers a lot of potential opportunities ranging from longer-distance room-temperature quantum interconnects and new remote sensing techniques to radio-over-fiber-based quantum control and readout of superconducting qubits.”

After obtaining a Ph.D. in the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics at ETH Zurich, he moved on to study mechanical and optical quantum devices at the California Institute of Technology. At IST Austria, he now works on new superconducting qubit encodings as well as on integrating superconducting qubit technology with photonic degrees of freedom.

His general goal is to study quantum devices in new parameter regimes and explore their potential applications in computation, communication, and sensing.

Dr. Juha Hassel, Head of Engineering and Development at IQM Quantum Computers

He previously worked in various roles in the research community, most recently as Principal Scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. During his 20-year career, he has predominantly worked on research topics related to physics, instrumentation, and applications of superconducting sensors and electronics in the fields of medicine, security, and quantum technology.

Dr. Hassel will be giving an overview of selected aspects related to the implementation of superconducting quantum processors. He will present experimental results on devices addressing performance aspects in terms of fabrication process quality, design solutions, and control optimisation. Furthermore, he will show how this is utilised in fully integrated quantum computers, as exemplified by IQM’s systems from 5 to 54 qubits.

His current role at IQM consists of leading the hardware development for the first-generation commercial quantum computers, and he is excited to speak at the SQA Conference.

It is a great opportunity to get to speak in front of an audience focused on superconducting quantum computing technology. I hope this will lead to fruitful discussions and mutually useful information exchange.”

With two months until the conference to starts, avoid disappointment by registering early here to secure your seat. For further information, you can also visit the official website.
